Can you imagine strolling through the woods, when you happen across a forest ranger trying to use a leaf blower? That ridiculous image is not too far off of what I see while driving around town. The amount of bagged leaves, tree clippings, grass, and dead foliage being tossed out, could easily boost a crop of Medical Marijuana- or anything else vegetative. If you think of feeding the soil not the plant, then you are on your way to producing a great organic Medical Marijuana crop.

One reason to focus on the organic aspect is that it’s very available. Most yards have grass, leaves, clippings, and other formerly alive vegetation. Aside from sparing you extra trash bag usage, hauling, and physical labor, this organic material needs to remain in the yard. You don’t need a fancy tumbler, chicken wire, or compost bin either- just an area of the yard dedicated for dead stuff. LOCATION OF WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR WOODEN GARDEN SHED – I know it sounds simple enough but I have seen many wooden garden sheds placed in low spots on the property. Unless you intend to build your wooden garden shed up this should not be your choice of location for your garden shed. Try to find a spot for the garden shed where water is not collecting in the first place. With a few other techniques picking the right location will make solving the remaining moisture issues easy.

USE GUTTERS ON YOUR WOODEN GARDEN SHED – I had to learn this lesson the hard way. The amount of moisture that will come off of your wooden garden shed will surprise you. Then if the moisture/rain water splashes on the ground nearby it will splatter up on your siding and start to deteriorate the siding over time or discolor the siding. By putting gutters on your wooden garden shed you can channel the water to the collection point and then get it away from the wood members of the floor or the post supports you have in the ground.

USE RAINBARRELS AS THE COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR YOUR GUTTERS – Today many rain barrels are manufactured which allow you to tie your drains from your gutter into rain barrels which collect all of the moisture for further use in the garden. Kits can also be purchased which allow you to drain the water into a drip irrigation system to water plants around the garden shed. Using rain barrels to collect the moisture and then using it is about as green as you can get. We all know we need to conserve fresh water supplies. Using solar powered pumps also conserves electricity which conserves our natural resources.

USING GRAVEL PADS FOR YOUR WOODEN GARDEN SHEDS –If you place your wooden garden shed on a gravel pad make sure you build the pad up in elevation enough to allow any surface water to work itself away from the pad for the garden shed. This will help a lot and with the use of rain barrels and gutters should solve many moisture related problems associated with your wooden garden shed. Even if you are using a concrete slab you will still want to use gutters and a rain collection system to keep the rain coming off the shed from collecting under the wooden flooring members of your garden shed.

SLOPE OF YOUR ROOF – If one side of the area where you want to place your shed drains the water away from the shed with great regularity then consider sloping your roof of your shed in a manner that will get the water to shed to this side of the shed. On some sheds I have built I used a completely sloped roof system to accomplish this and therefore had no peaks in my roof. The shed still looked great and you can find many proven garden shed plans that will have this type of a roof system to help you with your drainage issues.

Many homeowners today are interested in gardening and having a greenhouse to either sustain plants over the colder months or to at least grow all of their starter plants for spring planting. The good news is that you can either take a wooden garden shed and modify it to make a greenhouse or you can modify part of the wooden garden shed to make it a mini greenhouse.

HOW TO MAKE MY WOODEN GARDEN SHED A GREENHOUSE – With two simple modifications you can easily make your wooden garden sheds into greenhouses or mini greenhouses. The first method is to turn the wooden garden shed into a greenhouse by installing fiberglass panels for both the roofing cover and the siding for the wooden garden shed. Fiberglass panels will allow all of the light you need to turn the wooden garden shed into a greenhouse. So if you know from the start that you want a greenhouse then simply use the fiberglass panels for the siding and the roofing and you have a greenhouse. It really is that simple.

PARTIAL GREENHOUSE OUT OF MY WOODEN GARDEN SHEDS – In this method instead of making a whole wooden garden shed a greenhouse simply do a section of the roof in fiberglass panels and make the walls nearby or a wall section out of fiberglass panels and you have a perfect little mini greenhouse. At the bottom of this article there will a link to my website where you can see a picture of a modified wooden garden shed where a section is made into a greenhouse.

HOW HARD IS IT TO INSTALL THE FIBERGLASS PANELS –The beauty of using fiberglass panels to make your mini greenhouse is that they can be easily installed and are lightweight. For cutting the panels you will need a saw blade that is made to cut fiberglass or plexi-glass and these can be found at your local home improvement center or lumber yard. You will also need to pick up the specialized nails or screws to use to install these panels. The nails/screws will have a rubber grommet around them to prevent moisture from coming down the nail/screw plus these will allow you to nail the panel without crushing the fiberglass. Also because the fiberglass panels are ridged they simply overlap from side to side to prevent moisture from coming in and the panels are also overlapped from top to bottom to provide the proper sealing and drainage off of the roof.

DO I JUST SCREW THE PANELS INTO THE RAFTERS AND STUDS OF MY WOODEN GARDEN SHED – Where you buy your fiberglass panels they will also have some backer type boards that are pre-cut to match the ridges in the fiberglass panels. These are nailed onto the support that you have placed across the rafters or wall studs. By running 1” x 4” material perpendicular to the roof rafters or wall studs you will have a place to attach these ridged support boards. You then screw the fiberglass panels to these support members.

There really is not much you have to do to have a wooden greenhouse.  Modifying part of a larger wooden garden shed to make a greenhouse gives you the best of both worlds. You still have a portion of the wooden garden shed that you can use for storage or as a potting shed and you also have the greenhouse section.

HELPFUL TIP – Always pre-drill the holes where you are going to screw the fiberglass panels. This will keep you from starting cracks in the panels when you attach them to the studs/rafters of your wooden garden sheds.

HELPFUL TIP – To seal off the section of the wall that I have installed fiberglass panels on for the greenhouse section of the wooden garden shed I staple clear plastic sheeting on the inside of that wall to the wall studs. I then screw lathe boards to the studs to help hold the plastic sheeting. Now you have a dead air space that allows for better insulation of your wooden garden shed/greenhouse. Use the thicker plastic sheeting so it will last longer. Keep in mind if you have to change the plastic sheeting you simply unscrew the lathe boards, replace the sheeting and reattach the lathe boards. By using the lathe boards with screws it makes the job easy.

WHY PUT A WEATHERVANE ON MY WOODEN GARDEN SHED – There can be several reasons but I think there are two primary reasons to put a weathervane on your wooden garden sheds. First, weathervanes add a great look and finishing touch to your wooden garden shed. Second, they are still a tried and true weather instrument given to us by our forefathers. With so many of us living in subdivisions these days there are many micro-climates going on  so that the local weather station doesn’t really give you an accurate indication of wind direction in your local micro-climate. Add a wind speed cup to your garden shed and you have the best of both worlds. I do enjoy looking out the window and getting an accurate wind direction for my yard from my weathervane but I do have to say the look/appearance is probably the best thing about weathervanes on garden sheds.

WHERE DO I LOCATE MY WEATHERVANE ON MY WOODEN GARDEN SHED – There is no right or wrong answer on where you locate the weathervane on your garden shed other than to make sure that the location does not cause the weathervane to be affected by a nearby tree or other obstruction that blocks the wind or causes your weathervane to give a false reading. If wind obstruction is not an issue then locate the weathervane anyplace on the roof you desire to be able to see it from the house. I have seen weathervanes on either end of the garden shed or in the middle of the shed. I have seen them located directly on the roof or on the top of a cupola.

MAINTENANCE OF WEATHERVANES ON WOODEN GARDEN SHEDS – With most weathervanes being made of weather-resistant materials (copper, aluminum, cast iron, wrought iron etc) they are pretty much maintenance free. However, the maintenance I do suggest is to lubricate the moving parts once a year. This can be done with silicone spray or WD-40. The main benefit of this will be to keep your neighbors from ever complaining about a squeaky weathervane. Anyway, the maintenance is easy and only takes moment. Additionally, by lubricating the moving parts you will ensure that the weathervane does not wear out prematurely in windy areas.

STYLES OF WEATHERVANES FOR WOODEN GARDEN SHEDS – Today there are many more choices for weathervanes than what were available years ago. You can get the weathervane made out of copper, aluminum, cast iron or wrought iron. They come with traditional barnyard animal figures, wildlife figures, and even boats for a nautical theme. I won’t try to list all of the options but just know you can find most any kind of weathervane you want to put on your wooden garden shed. You could even buy a traditional style and take it to a metal shop and have it customized if that is what you want.
